The Magic Flute - NIDA X Sydney Conservatorium of Music

Location

National Institute of Dramatic Art

Date

October, 2022

I had the honour to work on NIDA's and Sydney Conservatorium of Music's production of Mozart's Opera 'The Magic Flute' as a props assistant and crew member.

My main makes for this production involved a free standing mirror and sink unit as well as Papageno's binoculars. Along with those makes, I assisted in the construction of the umbrella serpent and various other set pieces.

The binoculars were first modelled in Fusion 360 and then by using a combination of 3D printing and laser cutting, I constructed the physical version of the binoculars. They were then painted to have a brass finish with the grips being scenic finished to look like varnished timber.

The mirror and sink was constructed from a Rhino 3D model provided by the designer, Nick Fry. It is made from a radiata pine frame with a mirrored acrylic sheet for the mirror.
