Weapons Project - Fantasy Inspired Chinese Dao Broadsword

Location

National Institute of Dramatic Art

Date

May, 2022

The Weapons Project is culmination of all the techniques used in workshop foundations in which we are tasked in recreating a weapon from a region in the world with a fantasy or sci-fi inspired element. The weapon created had to be manufactured in three different materials.

For my weapon, I was assigned the Asian region with me deciding to focus on China specifically. To find my desired weapon, I delved into the history of ancient Chinese Weapons and ultimately landed on the Chinese Dao Broadsword.

For the fantasy element, I based my weapon around the idea of the sword being forged in the fire of a dragon. This dragon iconography is seen throughout my weapon with a fire shaped blade and carved dragon head.

Each blade is made from a different material with the first blade being the MDF master, the second being a polycarbonate effects blade with a transparent edge and a stunt foam blade.

These blades have the ability to be interchangeable with each blade slotting into the carved timber handle.

The weapons project is apart of a much bigger project in which my classmates and I collaborated to create a exhibition using the skills and techniques learnt in Exhibition Principals.
